Astroneer sandbox debuts on Steam Early Access games for Windows but we have details for Linux. The gamesplay takes during a 25th century gold rush. Where players explore the frontiers of outer space. All while risking their lives in harsh environments. Simple for the chance of striking it rich. Exploring and literally reshaping distant worlds. While #gameplay is a cross between No Mans Sky with planet exploration. Yet having that Minecraft‘esque feature of collecting resources and crafting.
On the Astroneer adventure. The player’s most useful tool is their ability to shape their world. While altering the terrain and extracting valuable resources from planets and moons. So these resources can be useful to trade or craft into new tools, vehicles and modules. So players can create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases.
- Reshape terrain as though it were of Play-Doh.
- Survive on and explore procedurally generated planets that can be entirely deformed and traversed.
- Build vehicles and travel to new planets and moons.
- Snap together components and objects to create custom vehicles and modules.
- 4 player online drop-in/drop-out co-op in Astroneer.
Astroneer Early Access Trailer (Windows, not Linux)
Linux Support for Astroneer:
“Linux (and Mac) are two platforms that we plan on supporting. But unfortunately, we couldn’t get it done in time for our initial launch.”
Support will happen. but it will need to be a bit later than we expected. Hopefully early next year.”
Why does this matter?
So Astroneer may not necessarily represent a native Linux build at present. Yet there obviously is a build coming in the new year. Developer System Era Softworks is working rapidly just updating the game.
Naturally, Linux Game Consortium is getting into some gameplay. While we can confirm that Astroneer is very addictive. Hence combining that exploration and crafting experience. While “printing” your own space craft in game to travel to other planets.
So not only will we see a native port, but this gives the community a way better No Mans Sky using Unreal Engine 4. Hence why Astroneer has a 9/10 rating on Steam.
How to save your game?
Here is what System Era Softworks has outlined via email:
“Currently you can save the game by getting into a rover seat or your dropship. Unfortunately right now on loading save games. The client doesn’t get their info in the save. So they’ll launch from the Astroneer drop pod fresh again. (We’re going to update that one very soon.)”
Tether Patch Beta! Help Test!
As lots of players are aware, tethers have been tanking performance! Y’all are building way more tethers while building ramps to the moon than I expected! Also, the tether system could have been better from the start.
In any case, I’ve rewritten a whole bunch of the tether system with massive performance gains, and have uploaded it to the [beta] branch on Steam. We’ll put it to the Default branch once we verify it doesn’t break anything else!
How can you help us? Switch over to the beta branch by right clicking on ASTRONEER->Properties->Betas->”beta – Experimental builds.” (Make sure you switch back to main when you’re done!)
Astroneer sandbox debuts on Steam Early Access, priced at $29.99 USD. The games only available for Windows, but Linux support is planned.
