Well, if you want to work in game development, you know what to expect. You’ll get laid off sooner or later!
Bethesda Softworks has confirmed several people at id Software have been let go, as part of standard business practise.
“As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go,”
Bethesda, however, confirmed that all game development on future id titles is unharmed by these layoffs and that the studio is constantly recruiting new employees as work on such titles continues.
So Doom 4 seems still on track, but this does sound to me like hiring young devs, then squeezing them until they run dry, and then replacing them by others. And so the circle turns around.
Although id Software may be a great name on one’s CV, such practise still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
