Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night side-scrolling game cancels support for Linux. The upcoming opus from the renowned Koji Igarashi for Linux, Mac and Windows. At least that’s what we thought during the Kickstarter back in 2015. And being that I’m one of those backers for the Kickstarter campaign, this is a huge disappointment.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the creation of the godfather of the “Igavania” genre of gothic, exploration-focused action platformer‘s. Initially revealing the Kickstarter with a goal of $500,00 USD in 2015. The title went on to become one of the most funded games on the platform. With more than $5.5 million pledged by fans eager for its creation. Coming soon to Steam, GOG and Humble Store. While we all wait and expect to have Linux support, right?
Igarashi cancels the games Linux support:
“We have a very important announcement to make. Bloodstained will no longer be supported on Mac and Linux. We have made this tough decision due to challenges of supporting middleware and online feature support. Making sure we deliver on the rest of the scope for the game. We will be offering backers who planned to play the game on Mac and Linux the option to change the platform of their order.
If you would like to change your platform, please send an email with your new platform request from the email address associated with your Kickstarter pledge. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and we hope for your understanding.”
This post also comes thanks to Koji Igarashi himself. A rather massive disappointment for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. And considering the funding from the Kickstarter campaign, this is a blatant disregard for the games backers. But no worries, the developer ends the post with, “Our whole team is working very hard. We look forward to your continued support.”
Personally, this information should come forth early in the development process. The lack of Linux and Mac support with such a massive funding support shows little regard for those eagerly awaiting the native release. But then again, this would also mean a demand for refunds, which in turn affects development.
