Half-Life: Alyx returns as a VR only game

half-life alyx returns as a vr only game on linux windows pc

Half-Life: Alyx makes a return as a VR only game for Windows PC, but Linux support too. Thanks to the efforts of Valve. Pre-orders are now live on Steam.

So here it is, Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. The story presents of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race. They are known as the Combine. While the story itself takes place between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. But the Steam page only shows Windows PC support. With a release date somewhere in March 2020. Although the 10% pre-order discount ends on March 30th. So I’d imagine the release is either on this date or close to it.

But Linux support is in question here. The Steam Discussion thread is crazy with comments. Although there is some suggestion here that “unofficial” statement that support is coming. The Linux spec’s apparently have not been updated for the Steam page.

Half-Life: Alyx will also have you playing as Alyx Vance. Humanity’s only chance for survival.
The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened. While they corral the remaining population in cities. Also mong them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists. This includes you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of the resistance. Continuing your secret scientific activity and performing critical research. While you build important tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Gameplay this time is different. Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all. But this time leveling up the experience. Since the whole game development focuses around virtual reality. Enabling gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life. Providing a deeper experience. While you interact with the environment directly. Then solve puzzles, explore your surrounding and engage in combat.

This is going to be interesting. Learning to physically lean to aim around a broken wall. Trying to make some impossible shot. Searching through shelves to find a healing syringe. Or maybe if you are lucky, some shotgun shells.
Then you have specific tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window. I never liked those headcrabs.

Also, those who have purchased Valve Index hardware by the end of 2019. Will have access to unique bonuses starting early next year. And from what I have seen so far, the Valve Index is THE VR headset.
Therefore, expect to see a set of Source 2 tools for building new environments. This will ship with Half-Life: Alyx. So players can build and contribute to new environments for the community. Which is what takes the coming release in March 2020 to the next level. Plus, Valve’s level authoring tool has been updated. So that it includes all of the game’s virtual reality gameplay tools and components.

Needless to say, Half-Life: Alyx is coming in March 2020. Be sure to Wishlist on Steam. But also keep a look out for Linux support coming soon to the product page. I’m also eager to see the Linux hardware requirements.
