Akamai’s platform to power Happy Cloud D2C and B2B offerings
Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) September 01, 2011
Today, Happy Cloud, Inc., the leading cloud-based on demand video game digital distribution platform, announced that it has optimized its game delivery solution leveraging Akamai’s Electronic Software Delivery for Gaming solution. Happy Cloud’s on-demand game delivery technology allows gamers to play games instantly without typical long download times, painful installation processes, or in-game lag.
The play instantly concept addresses a major pain and hurdle that publishers and gamers no longer need to worry about by using the Happy Cloud solution. By integrating with Akamai’s global platform, Happy Cloud is well-prepared for growth associated with adoption of its solution, as well as international expansion of its user base.
“The frustration of waiting overnight to download rich-experience video games has been a major hindrance to the broad adoption and success of digital distribution in the gaming industry to date. By collaborating with Akamai to optimize the end-user experience, we’ve created a solution that addresses this issue head on,” explains Eric Gastfriend, VP and GM of Happy Cloud. “Now game publishers, distributors and players can all reap the benefits from instant-on games.”
Happy Cloud has optimized its game delivery client for maximum performance across the Akamai platform, giving its on-demand game distribution solution the power of enhanced performance, speed, and improving the overall user experience. The Happy Cloud solution reduces the time to play a typical 8.5 GB (DVD-size) game downloaded over the Internet from between 1-5 hours to between 2-10 minutes depending on connection speed. Bringing to market a solution that finally focuses on the benefits to the gamer is the core goal of Happy Cloud’s emergence in the industry. Happy Cloud allows users to access games virtually instantaneously by loading a small portion of the game on the user’s computer to start, and then intelligently delivering pre-packaged and pre-installed game content as the user plays.
“In the dynamic online environment, gamers crave a high performance experience, and as a result, developers and publishers must master the complexity of delivering massive game files to global users. Poor performance and failed downloads can impact a launch as well as a company’s brand,” commented Kris Alexander, Chief Strategist for Connected Devices and Gaming at Akamai. “Akamai has a strong background and understanding of the online gaming industry, and is excited to engage with Happy Cloud in addressing the industry need to enable gamers to play games on demand without having to download and install an entire game.”

About Happy Cloud
Happy Cloud has developed a patent-pending, cloud-based, on demand solution for digital distribution of video games. The technology uses a virtualized file system pre-installed and pre-packaged on the network, eliminating the need for the burdensome download and installation typically associated with high-end PC games. No additional effort is required on behalf of publishers to make games available on the Happy Cloud—no developer time, source code, or demo builds are needed. The Happy Cloud flagship store opened to the public on July 18.
