Indie studio Zeboyd takes over third Penny Arcade game development

Two years ago, we heard from Hothead that the Penny Arcade Adventures series was no more, stopping short of a third title. Numerous reasons were named, but most of that is moot now, because someone else has picked up the torch.

Renamed Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, the third game is now in the hands of indie studio Zeboyd Games, known for Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII. So how did Zeboyd end up taking over the project? It all started with a single thread on the Penny Arcade forums.

After much complaining by the community over the series’ cancellation, one random commenter suggested Zeboyd as a possible candidate for developing a new Penny Arcade Adventures. A few weeks go by, and Boyd gets an email from Penny Arcade’s Robert Khoo saying they ought to talk.

Zeboyd’s two-man development staff, comprised of Boyd and Bill Stiernberg, are now handling Rain-Slick 3 with aid from Penny Arcade’s Jeff Kalles. According to Khoo, PA had been looking for a way to continue their games as an 8-bit series after Hothead left, but they lacked the resources to make their plans a reality. Then Khoo found the thread mentioning Zeboyd, a studio well-acquainted with retro style games.

With the fresh start, Rain-Slick 3 will also be accessible to newcomers who haven’t played the first two games. By doing this, Stiernberg notes that they’re hoping to accommodate both their own fans and Penny Arcade’s.

Boyd remarks the new game will be more of a standalone title, despite the number in its name:

“Since we realized it’s been quite some time since the last two [games], we’re trying to make it more of a standalone title. The world and the characters — there’s lots of connections to the past two games, but, as far as plot goes, you should be able to start the third game without any direct knowledge of the first two and do just fine.”

Zeboyd is handling most of the writing, with Jerry “Tycho” Holkins doing the editing and advising. Rain-Slick 3 will definitely be the most high profile game Zeboyd has ever done, and they feel the pressure.

Expect to see this game in the summer, on PC, Mac, Xbox LIVE Indie Games, iOS, and Android.
