Clone Drone in the Danger Zone dev is turning up the heat on Early Access games with positive feedback for Linux. The games functionality via Steam Play continues to work. Including some Very Positive reviews, holding at a solid 91%. Which provides solid feedback for the dev to continue expanding the game.

Well that’s all well and good, but Doborog Games emailed me with a full update regarding Linux support. Also details on Steam Play use, that sort of fell in their lap, so to speak. Along with future plans.

Steam Play and the future:

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone‘s singleplayer started working on Steam Play. Without a single change on our end (and even before I had heard about Steam Play!). I was ecstatic to hear from some of our players shortly after Steam Play was launched. And the game mostly worked in it.

The only issue that required tweaking was with multiplayer region pinging. As there is a known issue with Wine’s handling of the ping library. To provide a workaround for Steam Play players. So I added a “multiplayer region override” to our settings menu that will bypass the ping step. According to player reports, with that setting, multiplayer works for them in Linux!

I made that change since it was low hanging fruit & it already mostly worked in Linux via Steam Play. And some kind players who were both Windows and Linux gamers volunteering to test the workaround out for me before I shipped it. I’ve been super impressed by the passion of our players in the Linux gaming community and the encouragement and testing they’ve provided for Steam Play.

Linux games and the Consortium input:

From reading LinuxGameConsortium I see that games sometimes officially add Linux support but then later come to remove it. So I want to be up-front that Linux/Steam Play support may come and go for Clone Drone. As it’s not yet an official platform we support but it was serendipitous that it started working in Steam Play.
I’d encourage anyone interested in trying the game to give it a go in Steam Play mode. And take advantage of Steam’s 2 hour / 14 days of gameplay no-questions-asked refund policy as a way to try it out. If we do end up officially supporting Linux, they can then choose to purchase it later at that time.

We really don’t mind when players refund the game, just want them to be happy with their experience trying it out. For my part, I will do my best to keep the Steam Play version working end-to-end. It’s just worth keeping in mind that since we’re a tiny team and dependent on Steam Play. And the latest Unity working together. There’s a chance it could break in the future.

Future plans?

Same as I mentioned earlier this year, we don’t have concrete plans for an official native Linux port yet. But we have not ruled it out! Don’t want to make any promises until we’re closer to leaving Early Access. And planning the full release. It may depend on what things seem broken when I try out a native Linux build closer to our full out-of-Early-Access release in 2019.
The last time we tested a native Linux build (in 2017) there were some rendering issues. But those may resolve themselves when we do our next Unity version upgrade. If it seems to mostly work and there doesn’t seem to be a ton of issues. A native port for Clone Drone in the Danger Zone is something I’d love to explore.

Dev feedback:

In terms of Steam Play vs. exploring a native Linux build next year. I’d love to hear from any Linux players why they’d prefer a native Steam Linux port over Steam Play. (e.g., not sure if there’s a framerate benefit, etc). Reach out to me at [email protected], I would love to hear from you & talk shop.

I grew up playing the few games that were available on Linux as a kid (shout-outs to BZFlag, GTetrinet, Tux Racer!). So I love the idea of contributing to the availability of fresh games if it ends up being feasible given our constraints in development. Hope I get the opportunity to give back to the community as part of co-developing this game. And hopefully the tides of our upstream tooling make this all possible!

We have been working with the Clone Drone in the Danger Zone dev for a while. Since Doborog Games are eager to continue support for the Linux community. The studio is also open to player feedback and they are working to ensure the games compatibility with the platform. So it’s a pleasure to see development progress along with community involvement. Therefore I expect we will have more positive feedback from the dev in 2019.

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone is a third person sword fighter. Where any part of your body can be sliced off. With your mind downloaded into a robot gladiator. You must survive the sinister trials of the arena.

How to play Clone Drone in the Danger Zone Multiplayer on Linux:

In order to play multiplayer first select a region under Options -> Multiplayer Region (otherwise it will crash due to ping library issue).

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone features:

  • Dismembering Opponents: The ability to cut off body parts is central to the gameplay. Jumping on one leg is a common occurrence. Large enemies have to be cut down to size before a fatal blow can be successful.
  • Skill Intensive Combat: Combat is fast and intense, putting great emphasis on movement, timing and positioning. Pick your poison with an array of weapons to take enemies down.
  • Entertaining Commentary: With 8,934 spoken words, Commentatron and Analysis-Bot. Providing a running commentary of your performance and react to your activities.
  • Twitch Mode: See the Twitch chat come to life in-game and place bets on how the streamer will die. Use the Danger Coins you earn to help the streamer, or spawn more enemies!

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone is currently available on Steam Early Access for Windows and Mac. Well, being that the games development is still under way using Unity 3D.
Since we expect native support. At least we have functionality using Steam Play, with a Linux support being possible closer to the full release. Plus the dev also encourages more community feedback, so reach out to test.
