So the day has finally come, developer Hinterland Studios releases the first two episodes. Since The Long Dark is available out of Early Access on Steam for Linux, Mac and Windows. While the full game will include a story mode across five episodes. So this The Long Dark story is “Wintermute.” Containing the first two episodes. Further episodes three, four, and five will be available in late 2017. Going into early 2018.

So the first two episodes offer the player hours of gameplay. Well according to Hinterland Studios. Probably more since the games open world. Check out the trailer:

The Long Dark WINTERMUTE

The episodic story-mode for The Long Dark. WINTERMUTE launches with two of the five episodes that form Season One.

  • In Episode One: “Do Not Go Gentle”. Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood get separated. Since their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness. All in the aftermath of the mysterious flash of light in the sky.
Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid. Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton. Where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.
  • In Episode Two: “Luminance Fugue”. Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can you trust him?

So the first two episodes of WINTERMUTE release with approximately 15 hours of gameplay. While episodes Three to Five are part of the games full price. Which will be unlocked for free as they are released.

So being that I cannot personally boast about playing The Long Dark, yet. Almost everyone I know who owns the game have positive reviews. Which is also obvious on the games Steam Early Access pageGOG and Humble Store. Since the game also releases with support for Linux, Mac and Windows.
