Mozilla releases open source HTML 5 browser based MMO, BrowserQuest

n order to show off the power of HTML 5 to try and move people away from Flash, Mozilla has teamed up with Little Workshop to create a cute little SNES style MMO called BrowserQuest that one can play in one’s HTML 5 supported browser.

The game is a pretty basic exploration fantasy MMO, where there are dungeons, monsters, trash mobs, boss fights, taverns and potions— including one potion that turns you into a Firefox— as well as achievements and a few internet memes thrown in for good measure.

The game isn’t very long, but it’s more of an HTML 5 showpiece than anything. Took me about a half hour to beat the whole thing.

You can play it here, and the source code is available here.
