The #creators of Descent just #launched a Kickstarter for the ultimate 6-degree-of-freedom shooter, Overload, re-introducing a new type of “gameplay with modern graphics and technology.”

Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog’s, the founders of Parallax Software have reunited to form #RevivalProductions, a new studio that just announced a spiritual successor to Parallax’s seminal 1994 “six-degrees-of-freedom” shooter Descent.

Similar to many developers, Revival is crowdfunding the project to be able to return to their roots. The Kickstarter campaign for Overload just went live this morning with a $300,000 goal. And the team at Revival have been working on the game since 2014, having already set look and feel in place. Funds raised through the campaign will go primarily to helping balance the game and build out further the content.

“Since Descent 3, there haven’t been any major six-degree-of-freedom shooters, and we hope that Overload can help re-establish the genre,” Kulas outlines. “The time is right for a resurgence, with joysticks making a comeback, and cockpit-based games being ideal for VR (though VR isn’t required to enjoy the game).”

Overload Features:

  • Intense singleplayer action in 6-degrees-of-freedom
  • 15 level campaign filled with explosive combat and exploration
  • Breath-taking graphics and spectacular sound
  • More than a dozen sinister robot types and 3 massive bosses
  • 12 upgradeable weapons
  • 5 difficulty levels let you tune the game to match your abilities
  • Fully customizable joystick, gamepad, mouse and keyboard controls
  • Releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One (Linux and Mac is 1st stretch goal $350,000)

The campaign calls for a 15-level singleplayer campaign on Windows PC, PS4, and Xbox One with a dozen enemy types, three bosses, and 12 weapons.

There’s no initial plans for a multiplayer, “in the future we hope to develop a multiplayer version of the game, and we’ve thought about how to make it happen after Overload is done. When that time comes, we’ll make sure it’s as awesome as the single-player experience that we’re working on now.”

“MAC & LINUX VERSION: Hitting this stretch goal guarantees Overload is released on Mac & Linux. In that case, they will also be released simultaneously with the PC version.”

Overload is expected to launch in March of 2017. And the Linux stretch goal is not outrageous, too bad they never included a native port in the original goal. However, at the time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign has already passed $16,000 in funding.
