Shovel Knight appearance in Yooka-Laylee

Shovel Knight making appearance in Yooka-Laylee

Shovel Knight seems to be making an #appearance in quite a few indie games. Making a #character #cameo is all in good fun, but then there there are these stunts that attempt to sell more games. Between Linux indie hits like Aegis Defenders, Indivisible, Starr Mazer, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, then Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 and Runbow on top of those.

“We’ve always been fans of Shovel Knight,” says Playtonic Games‘s Chris Sutherland at EGX, “and thought it’d be great to have some guest star characters from the rest of the indie community. It’s great for indies to be able to do that. There’s no kind of big barrier, you don’t have to go through seven levels of approval, you just go: yeah, we’re going to do that.”

Now, we can add Yooka-Laylee to that list of indie titles as well. Shovel Knight has been confirmed to make an appearance in the upcoming platformer from Playtonic. A studio comprised of the former Rare developers, where Shovel Knight joins a handful of other characters introduced in this new trailer from EGX 2016.

Thankfully, we will not have to fight against Shovel Knight: as he appears to be an NPC. Whether he will be included as a major or minor character is not clear yet, but there’s no indication he’s a “pre-order incentive” or something ridiculous.

Yooka-Laylee is expected to release in early 2017 on Linux, Mac and Windows PC. Here’s more recent gameplay footage released from EGX 2016.
