Singapore Game Studio Nubee Raises $13 Million From Japanese VC

Singapore-based game development studio Nubee has announced the completion of a round of funding worth one billion yen (about US$13 million) from Japanese venture capital firm JAFCO. A new Tokyo branch is in the works as well, plus fresh staff hirings too.

If you haven’t heard of Nubee, you’re not alone. It was only founded last November, but the company boasts of ‘rapid success’ and profitability since then. According to its statement, Nubee has developed eight game titles, including Japan Life (for iOS and Android), which the company claims has had 2.5 million downloads in 2.5 months. Browsing through Nubee’s other titles, there seems to be some kind of coin obsession happening, with games like Coins vs Aliens, Coins vs Zombies, Coin Pirates, and Fortune Coins.

Nubee’s parent company is furniture online retailer Vega Corporation in Fukuoka, Japan, and this funding will be ‘injected’ through them, according to Nubee. Shinichi Fuki, the president and CEO of JAFCO commented on the investment:

We see a huge market potential for Nubee’s global business strategy for social games on smart devices… We also like their unique monetization model which, we believe, is gained from their experiences in Vega’s success in the competitive e-commerce market in Japan. With our extensive global network and Nubee’s strong management team, we can surely expand the business quickly worldwide.
