You might be wondering, where did this all start? SOULVARS was originally ginolabo’s pet project. He wanted to create a traditional JRPG, but did it so well that when it was released on Android and iOS in early 2022. Then SOULVARS skyrocketed to the top of the charts. It was the top paid RPG and the second top paid app overall in Japan on both Google Play and iTunes.
Seeing how popular it was, SHUEISHA GAMES, which is a part of Japan’s biggest manga publisher, decided to team up with ginolabo. Their goal for the pixel-powered JRPG deckbuilder? To bring SOULVARS to Linux and consoles. But they didn’t just want to copy and paste the mobile version onto a larger screen. As part of the deal with SHUEISHA, ginolabo got to work with a famous manga artist, Shiro Usasaki, for the character art. So, the visuals you’ll see both in promo materials and during your playtime are pretty unique.
Now, what about the story? In the world of SOULVARS, there are these creatures called Dominators, who show us the dark side of tech. To deal with them, there are elite squads of Soulbearers – these are superhumans who are born with different Souls. You’ll step into the shoes of Yakumo, a Soulbearer who’s not tied to any squad but takes missions from the DDO (Dominator Disposal Organization).
What about the gameplay? SOULVARS takes the best of old and new. It’s got great pixel art and a turn-based combat system. You’ll need to gather equipment to get more Soulbits – think of them as cards that you play. Mix and match these Soulbits to discover new moves and skills. There are more than 100 of them.
And there’s also the party-based combat. Each enemy is like a puzzle you need to solve. So, it’s up to you to put together a team that can deal with any type of enemy. And also figure out their weaknesses, then use Soulbits to perform over 200 killer moves.
As for the SOULVARS story, it’s really gripping. You, as Yakumo, and other Soulbearers will uncover the truth about unchecked tech, the DDO’s origins, and the secrets behind the Dominators.

Jun 27, 2023 3:56 pmThe demo does not run, at least on my computer. It seems the developer does not know what a linux version is based on the discussions on steam.

Jun 27, 2023 10:35 pmThis is annoying. Sorry to hear about the Demo. I have the full game which just updated, but it only seems to run via Proton 7.0-6 now.
Plan B is Proton, until the developers get themselves sorted out.
