Open world city at your disposal
If you’re hankering for a real-time, class-based strategy game with tactical combat set in a cyberpunk world, then you’ll be happy to know that 5 Live Studios’ Satellite Reign has been successfully funded on Kickstarter. Starting with an initial goal of £350,000 ($530,000), Satellite Reign finished with an impressive £461,333 ($707,741.41). Even though its Kickstarter is over, 5 Lives is leaving its Paypal donations open, with money from that helping to obtain the stretch goals.
Satellite Reign gives players a squad of four agents with distinct character classes to command and vie for control of a “fully simulated, living cyberpunk city.” The game world will be designed in a way to give players total control and the means to play however you want, forming strategies that not even its creators predicted. Players can approach missions from multiple ways, be it guns blazing, stealth, infiltration, or even by spreading propaganda to influence the city’s citizens.
Developer 5 Lives Studios (composed of veterans who worked on the Syndicate series, Grand Theft Auto IV, and others) describe Satellite Reign’s game world thusly:
The world’s governments are controlled by mega-corporations, democracy to the highest bidder. Society is structured for the benefit of those in power. The poor exist in the dark squalid underbelly of the city, while the wealthy swim in opulence and luxury on the upper tiers, and the vast middle-class are too comfortable with their lives of convenience to see the world for what it really is. Corporate police patrol the streets, brutally maintaining the status quo, all under the guise of keeping the people safe.
The time for change is now, as a mysterious organisation rises from the slums of the city. They’ll have to bribe, steal, hack and augment their way through the barriers between them and their ultimate goal…but what are they trying to achieve? To free the masses from the corporate stranglehold, or to take control for themselves? That, is up to you.
It sounds fascinating, and certainly a unique approach. The city in Satellite Reign is described as a living metropolis, with citizens going about their lives and filling the streets during the day. Night time is when the criminal organizations come out to play. Everything in the city is designed to react to your actions, from the citizens, to the police and corporate soldiers; modify a power grid and you’ll see how the city adapts to it (or maybe fails to).
Satellite Reign is being built on the Unity Engine for Windows, Mac, and Linux. All Paypal donations go towards the stretch goals, like mentioned earlier, and also operate on the same tier scale as Kickstarter. So a donation of ($25) nets a digital copy of Satellite Reign, with higher tiers offering digital art books, soundtracks, beta access, and more.
