Syder Arcade Coming to Linux with Your Support

Recently, Studio Evil, contracted Linux Game News regarding their new title, “Syder Arcade”. A retro style, free scrolling, multi-directional shoot ‘em up game, hopefully coming to linux. That all depends on you. As of this moment, Syder Arcade is only available on Mac OSX and Windows.
However, the team at Studio Evil want to make sure to include linux in the list of available platforms. And yes, that also means Syder Arcade is available onSteam Greenlight.

Having been actually taken by the trailer. I was keen to inquire and find out further details….

What engine will you be using to build the Linux version?

We are currently using Unity 3D by a year and a half, and we are pretty satisfied with it because of the multiple platforms deployment and the ease of use. We used to write our custom engines in past years with mono/c#, opengl/directx, but we decided to use a tool like Unity to concentrate our efforts more on gameplay and quality of the final product without struggling with every single platform needs.

Despite it takes some work to have a build that run on a specific platform (from a pair of weeks to a pair of months) it is really less time consuming than rewrite specific code to proper manage GPUs or networking layer or so. The drawback is that you have to buy every single license for any platform you decide to deploy to, per seat, but we think it’s ok, it is pretty cheaper than the most famous engines.

Where does the team stand on funding in relation to a final build? What is your funding goal?

The costs for the linux version are just those of updating Unity from 3.5 to 4.0 and few weeks of testing and optimizing. Our funding goals are not tied to a single release of the game, so we see Syder Arcade as a complex project that spans over all the platforms we support.

Do you have an alpha or beta linux edition available?

Not yet, simply because we are waiting for the final version of Unity engine 4.0 to start public testing.

Thank you, if you want to help us with this project. What we need at this moment is some media exposure, pointing to our greenglight page could be awesome, and the support of your viewers to help bring Synder Arcade to Linux.

Cheers,

STUDIO EVIL
