Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel gets a very big Linux and Mac update

#Aspyr Media is proving itself to be one of the biggest supporters of Linux gaming having #ported Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to both Linux and Mac using #OpenGL. Already having a history of porting titles to Mac, the actual Linux port was probably was not much of a jump for Aspyr. To the point that patches can now arrive on all platforms at once and continue to maintain multiplayer connectivity. That’s impressive.

The latest patch for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is quite big, “adding a number of performance improvements and fixes a long list of bugs. Perhaps most important is that, since the update has been simultaneously released on all supported Steam platforms, players should see no disruption in cross-platform multiplayer functionality!”

The update should download and install automatically for all Steam users. And, should you want to go deep and see a full list of the detailed changelog, you check out it out here.

A new Borderlands game is in the works for Gearbox Software

Take-Two Interactive Software, the publisher Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series, said in an earnings call today that the studio is working on a #newgame in the loot-centric shooting franchise.

Karl Slatoff, the president of New York-based Take-Two, #confirmed this in this afternoon’s analyst call for the company’s third fiscal quarter ended Dec. 31.

The move shows that Take-Two and Gearbox are doubling-down on the Borderlands property, which recently saw the debut of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Telltale’s Tales From the Borderlands point-and-click adventure series.

Borderlands is an action role-playing FPS video game with a good sense of humor. Slatoff said that Take-Two isn’t yet ready to say when the new Borderlands will debut yet. The first game in the series debuted in 2009.

Gearbox is also working on Battleborn, an all-new intellectual property developed for PS4, Xbox One, and PC targeted at shooter and action game fans. Linux Game News has yet to confirm Linux support.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's newest character Lady Hammerlock in the latest DLC

Sir Hammerlock has a sibling and she’s the older sister that every little brother is terrified of. Lady Aurelia the Baroness is the newest playable character coming to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel as a downloadable add-on. Starting on January 27, 2015 (January 28 in Europe and Asia), you’ll be able to pick up the Lady Hammerlock Pack on Linux, Mac, Windows PC on Steam.

If you’ve already picked up the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass, the Lady Hammerlock Pack is included, but for players that haven’t, the pack will also be sold on its own for $9.99. The Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass is available for $29.99 and grants access to all four add-on content packs – a $39.96 value! – as they become available on Xbox Live, PSN, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. While each add-on content pack will be available for sale individually, the Season Pass offers all four packs for just about the price of three! The Season Pass also includes the previously-released Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack, which makes Borderlands 2’s maniacal antagonist playable for the first time (or at least someone who looks an awful lot like him), as well as the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught, which raises the level cap to 60 while offering a new challenge arena with new enemies, new weapons, new class mods, and new customization options.

Lady Hammerlock’s progression branch into Huntress, Cold Money and Contractual Aristocracy skill trees. Huntress focuses on sniping, offering a skill that dishes out critical hit bonuses for each consecutive shot on a target. Cold Money is all about ice damage, as made evident by one of its abilities implementing Cryo damage with any equipped weapon. Contractual Aristrocracy is all about status, as suggested by one of its unlockables reaping Lady Hammerlock bonuses from kills made by her peasant teammates.

When firefights call for desperate measures, Lady Hammerlock’s Cold As Ice action skill spawns a Frost Diadem Shard that chases down and latches onto targets, dealing constant damage until they finally keel over so that the shard can move onto its next target.

If you sat out The Pre-Sequel in hopes of a current-gen port but still want to freeze things to death as Lady Hammerlock, don’t fret – Borderlands Handsome Collection will include all season pass DLC when it arrives on March 24.

The Holodome Onslaught DLC coming to Linux and Mac December 16

Recently #GearboxSoftware announced the impending #release of the latest #DLC for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, called the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught. Aspyr media confirmed the content will be arriving on the Linux and Mac on the same date as Windows PC, December 16!

Here’s a synopsis from Gearbox:

This add-on pack features all-new narrative content including appearances from veteran Vault Hunters Gaige and Axton, who recently returned to the Crimson Raiders HQ. While they were gone on a mission, they missed out on the events of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and ask Athena to recount the story. Since they’re not the most patient badass Vault Hunters on Pandora, they just want an abbreviated version – only the juicy, violent stuff.

As Athena tells the tale, you’ll play through The Holodome Onslaught, a new challenge arena where you’ll fight wave after wave of foes, including some of The Pre-Sequel’s most memorable badasses as well as several new enemies. You’ll also be able to earn new weapons, new class mods, and some radical new heads and skins.

As bonus content, this add-on pack also includes the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack, which raises the level cap to 60, giving each of your characters 10 new levels, plus 10 new skill points to earn!

In addition to the extra content, this DLC will come with a free patch available to everyone that adds a third playthrough (Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode).

Of note is that this DLC is included in the Pre-Sequel Season Pass, so if you’re as big a Borderlands fan as we are, then that’s probably the path you’ll want to take. Otherwise, it will be available for purchase on its own on December 16 for $9.99.
