Last year we brought news about a gorgeous #pixelart #adventure Children of Morta for Linux, Mac or Windows PC, which is now officially on Kickstarter.

Children of Morta‘s titular family, the Bergson clan, has been tasked with protecting Mount Morda from dark spirits.

Developed by Shadow Blade studio Dead Mage, Children of Morta is a top-down action roguelike in the vain of The Binding of Isaac. It’s got randomly generated levels, multiple characters to choose from, and even procedurally generated story events, so no two play-throughs will be alike in terms of both the narrative and level design.

Children of Morta is a story-driven hack ‘n slash game incorporating the elements of the roguelike genre, where you will go on an adventure with the guardian family of Bergsons.

The family have lived on the outskirts of Mount Morta, guarding it for many generations. As a tragic event in Morta corrupts the roots of life deep in the mountain, all the creatures turn into furious, mindless monsters. Now the land’s only hope is for the Bergsons to find the seeds of life and use them to cleanse the corruption.

The game has a unique art style blending the old-school 2D pixel art aesthetics with a few modern lighting and rendering techniques, bringing to life a world of fantasy and mystery.

Children of Morta’s Features:

  • Play as any of the family members with their unique abilities.
  • Narrative meets roguelike! As games like Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy and Risk of Rain inspire the roguelike elements of the game, it also offers a novel blend of narration and roguelike! You will experience a rich story comprised of a specific narrative arc and various random events.
  • Unique blend of traditional pixel art with modern lighting and effects; prepare your eyes to be pleased!
  • Craft various items and potions using materials found in your adventures by the family’s experienced craftsmen!
  • Highly replayable! Play through an endless number of procedurally generated content.

Unlike The Binding of Isaac, Children of Morta‘s aesthetic is a lot more colourful and flowery than Isaac’s cartoonish gore and grime. Its combat also appears to be primarily melee-based, though there are characters that specialise in long-range weaponry. Each character has their own unique attacks and special abilities. One can evade, another stun enemies, and another can push foes back to create some distance before shooting an arrow through their chest. Hopefully the game’s depth will live up to its lavish art style, as that’s arguably its most unique feature.

Dead Mage is looking for $65K to finance Children of Morta on Linux, Mac or Windows PC and it’s raised $19,608 so far. It has until February 19th to meet it’s Kickstarter goal with an estimated October 2015 release.
