The Bard’s Tale IV now live on Kickstarter for Linux, Mac and Windows PC

Thirty years after the release of the first game in the series, comes a #dungeoncrawler from the creators of Wasteland 2 and Torment. The long awaited sequel to the Bard’s Tale trilogy has launched a crowdfunding campaign. #inXileEntertainment have gone live with the #Kickstarter campaign for The Bard’s Tale IV. The single-player fantasy game will be available for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC, with a release planned for October 2017.

Of course to make the Kickstarer even sweeter, as per our news post yesterday, inXile Entertainment are proud to announce their unprecedented crowdfunding offer: anyone who backs The Bard’s Tale IV on Kickstarter in the first 24 hours of the campaign will receive a FREE copy of inXile’s Wasteland 2, or CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. (until 6/3 at 6am, PST)

For all backers of The Bard’s Tale IV at the $20 Reward Tier and above. Wasteland 2 will be delivered on Steam or DRM-Free on GOG.com after the Kickstarter campaign. The Witcher and The Witcher 2 will be delivered on GOG.com.

While The Bard’s Tale IV uses a turn-based battle system where commands are carried out immediately after being given and players do not need to wait for actions to play out before assigning commands to other character. Players develop their own customisable party of adventurers through various puzzle-filled dungeons and branching quests around the rebuilt city of Skara Brae. So you can progress and grow a party of adventurers as you see fit. Build a combat-hardened warrior to lead the way, or a spell-flinging Conjurer to provide support from the back lines. A character’s class provides the basic archetype, but as you progress you will tweak and evolve your party to suit your play style.

inXile Entertainment will bring back many popular races like humans, elves, dwarves, half-orcs, and including some newly inspired races like the Trow. The races all have their own unique culture and history, integrating your choices more into the game’s narrative. The world and citizens of The Bard’s Tale IV react to your party’s make-up, branching the quest structure and providing a unique experience depending on who is joining you.

Game Features:

  • A singleplayer, party-based dungeon crawl, rich in exploration and combat
  • Dungeons filled not just with dangerous fights but with challenging puzzles and devious riddles
  • Dynamic phase-based combat, where the pace of battle is animated and fluid, but still gives you time to think and respond to your enemies
  • A game set to beautiful Gaelic music, where the Bard’s songs and melodies affect gameplay
  • Co-funded by fans and inXile: if this game hits its $1.25 million goal, inXile will put in at least $1.25 million of its own money to double the initial budget!
  • Built using Unreal Engine 4, for Linux, Mac and Windows PC. Available from Steam or DRM-Free from GOG.com
  • Available in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Polish
  • Built for and with the help of our fans.  Your feedback and input directly impact the design and features of the game during alpha and beta stages

The original Bard’s Tale games allowed you to evolve your magic class characters from the Conjurer and Magician to the more powerful Sorcerer, Chronomancer, Geomancer, and even the feared Archmage, each providing new spell trees to explore. inXile Entertainment will extend this system to all class types for increased levels of customization and tinkering. As your magic and combat abilities grow, you will combine spells and skills from your different party members for increased effects greater than the sum of their parts.

Coming with a non-linear level design, The Bard’s Tale IV embraces this concept. While you explore the world, you will reach areas, obstacles, and monsters you won’t be able to defeat. By venturing out into new areas, developing additional skills and spells, or finding enchanted weapons and armor, you can return with a new set of tools better equipped for the job. Definitely expect a challenge, this game will not be easy.

The Bard’s Tale IV will be a dynamic experience: as soon as you decide what a character will do, they immediately act. This is the first way in which battles dynamically change, as your rolls and effects can have a variety of outcomes which might make you rethink your next action.

inXile Entertainment is looking for $1,250,000 in funding by Saturday July 11, 2015, with a currently total of $469,544 and a healthy 10,374 backers. Those that want to earn a copy of The Bard’s Tale IV for their pledge will need to put down $27 for a downloadable copy, although there are fifteen thousand copies available at $20. So if you pledge the $20 Reward Tier or higher in the first twenty-four hours of the campaign, you will also receive a free digital copy of Wasteland 2, The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Bard’s Tale 4 goes live tomorrow on Kickstarter and early pledges get a free game

The Bard’s Tale 4 is set to go live on Kickstarter on June 2, and inXile Entertainment are looking to #reward #early #backers. Meaning,  if you back the project within the first 24 hours, you will get one free game.

The Kickstarter campaign will go live on June 2, at 2pm UK time, which is the 30th anniversary of the original Bard’s Tale release date. And if you back the project at the $20 tier or higher, you will qualify for a free game out of the following titles: Wasteland 2 (Steam or GOG), The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (GOG). The free games will be sent at the end of the Kickstarter campaign, when pledges have been collected

“This is our way to show our gratitude to those who continue to support us,” explained inXile boss Brian Fargo. “We’re also very happy to be working with our friends at CD Projekt, who have shown they understand the right way to treat your fans!”

A revival of the classic dungeon crawl The Bard’s Tale 4 is built on Unreal Engine 4.

Mac OS X

(Coming soon, but you can guess them from the PC specs!)

CPU: Core 2 Duo, i3 or similar
Memory: 2GB Ram
Graphics Card: OpenGL 3/GLSL 1.5 compatible graphics card.
Sound Card: OpenAL compatible sound card.
Input Device: Mouse and keyboard.
Installation: 3GB free HD space

Known Issues

Due to the size of the installer it may take a long time for the installer to actually start. This may last several minutes (up to five minutes in some instances). There are reports that virus checkers may extend this delay so you may wish to turn them off during the installation process.
Multiplayer is currently very much in beta. Also, in order to enhance the eventual multiplayer experience, the team decided not to finalise the balance between ships. Feedback from players is very welcome. The true multiplayer experience will be available in the next release. Till then, if you wish to experiment, here’s how to get started.

Simply download the installer and run it. The Installer will guide you through installing the game.

Mac OS X

Mount Diaspora.dmg, and follow instructions within to copy Diaspora to the Applications folder. Note: Before you play for the first time (only need to do this once), please double click on RUN_ME_ONCE.command to install the most appropriate graphics settings. Double click on wxlauncher, and press Play, located in the bottom right corner.

First, open a terminal and change to the directory where you downloaded Diaspora.

Then open the archive by typing

tar —lzma -xf Diaspora_R1_Linux.tar.lzma

or if that command doesn’t work, the following two commands instead:

unlzma -z -k Diaspora_R1_linux.tar.lzma

tar -xf Diaspora_R1_Linux.tar

Then follow the instructions in Diaspora_R1_Linux/Diaspora/README.txt, with one correction: after you start the launcher in step 5, select your screen resolution from the drop down box in the Basic Settings tab before you press Play. Otherwise, you’ll be running in 1024×768.

During the time we’ve spent developing Diaspora, we have frequently been asked which songs from the show we’ve used in our trailers. The fact is that almost all the music in the game or trailers has been original. So for that reason, we’re also releasing the soundtrack. You can find details on it here.
