New MOBA from S2 Games Announced, Strife, in Development

This is the Heroes of Newerth team’s take on the “second generation” of MOBAs.

When we think of the current generation of MOBAs, we think of games like Heroes of Newerth. It’s fitting, then, that HoN‘s developer, S2 Studios, is now heading up what they hope will be the second generation. They today announced that they are developing Strife, a new MOBA with community-driven, story-based design.

The narrative aspect of Strife sounds rather unique – admittedly, it’s something that doesn’t inform other MOBAs beyond the usual elf-laden fantasy setting, though Strife is attempting to use backstory to bolster the connection that players have with their heroes. Harbingers of darkness, known as the Dharkwave, promise to rend the world – and it’s up to an Army of Light to prove themselves worthy of facing these baddies. There’s not much info on the very specifics of the gameplay yet, but we do know that S2 are seeking to innovate MOBAs a bit.

Seeking to encourage teamwork, for instance, Strife is attempting to rejuvenate the genre by including in-client social systems and rewards for team collaboration. It also wishes to upend its notorious reputation for being a game for hardcore players – Strife is designed to provide instructive and informative feedback to guide newcomers and veterans alike through the game.

“We’ve learned a great deal about this maturing genre through a wide range of analytical studies and experience,” says S2 CEO Marc DeForest. “For Strife, we want to take MOBAs to the next level, utilizing our resources to blend the processes of game development and player engagement to create a more enjoyable experience that grows the community and evolves the idea of what MOBAs can be.”

S2 is currently the only studio with two MOBAs in development. Strife has an estimated release window of this winter. The below teaser doesn’t reveal anything in the way of gameplay, but it does feature what appears to be a guy wearing a fairly cool bird mask. For a chance at the upcoming closed beta, head on over to the Strife website.

Kalamazoo's "S2 Games" boosting Michigan's economy

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) – It’s no secret that the video game industry has exploded worldwide. Trying to find a niche in the highly-competitive arena is no small feat.

A company from Kalamazoo has not only found a niche, it’s cornered the market, and the game they’ve created has almost become a religion in some countries.

“Heroes of Newerth” is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed by “S2 Games” for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The game was released on May 12, 2010 and then re-released as a free-to-play game on June 29, 2012.

“We publish the game and provide support for it,” said Nathan Garcia, who is “S2 Games” marketing manager.

“Heroes of Newerth” puts two teams of players against each other: the Legion and the Hellbourne. Players on each team choose ten of two heroes, featuring a variety of abilities and advantages. Players control a single hero from a top-down perspective. The game ends when the opposing team’s main structure is destroyed.

“The characters in the game were created by people working here [in Kalamazoo]”, added Garcia. “Heroes of Newerth is a completely made in Michigan game.”

Garcia says new heroes are added monthly to the game, which has gone global. “Heroes of Newerth” has been downloaded over 8 million times, and it currently has more than 2.5 million active players worldwide.

“To say the growth is explosive I think would be very fair at this point,” added Garcia.

The success “Heroes of Newerth” has brought to “S2 Games” has allowed the Kalamazoo-based company to add several new jobs in the past year.

“Our production team has grown from 12 people in 2011 to 50 in 2012,” said Garcia. “We’re always looking for new people, especially locally.”

Garcia says “Heroes of Newerth” is the number one played video game in Thailand. It’s also extremely popular in Singapore, Russia and the Philippines.

Thanks to “Heroes of Newerth”, “S2 Games” has emerged as a major player in the gaming industry. They’ve created a good-versus-bad game that’s – good – for the Michigan economy.

“S2 Games” plans to release a new character for “Heroes of Newerth” sometime this week.

Five years from now the company plans to grow the game’s player-base and elevate into a worldwide “e-sport”, with a competitive, international video game league featuring elite and pro gamers battling to become world champions.

Heroes Of Newerth Heroes Are Now Free For Everyone !

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is a DOTA inspired game that has a native GNU/Linux client (some say it’s much more stable than the Windows client).

HoN begun in 2010 when it officially came out, as a pay $30 , play forever (no monthly fee).

At 2011 HoN went free to play, but new players (with the free account) had a limited pool of heroes each week.

Today HoN finally released all it’s heroes (except the “early access”) for free, to everyone !

Today we have an announcement of epic proportions for the HoN community. On Friday, July 20th, Heroes of Newerth will become Free-to-Own, with all heroes released becoming free for all players. This is a major step forward in the development of HoN and after months of careful consideration and direct input from the HoN community, the time has come to make the HoN gameplay experience open to all users.

We agree with the community that HoN is best played with a full hero pool available to all players and that both the new and the longtime, dedicated players alike can benefit from the change. We want players to have the freedom to invite their friends and to recommend heroes based on playstyle and not a free hero pool. Players will no longer be limited by which heroes they can afford, so when a line-up calls for a certain hero, you can answer the call and focus on what’s important in each game of HoN.

This change is equally important in our mission to revitalize the myriad of game modes in HoN. HoN offers so many other fun twists, options, and strategies outside of All Pick that any passionate fan can attest to. We recognize this and don’t want players to be turned away from these modes due to restriction. With all heroes and game modes, players will have the complete HoN experience at their disposal.

Last, but not least, with this change we seek to have a significant impact on the competitive HoN scene. All players will now be on equal footing during competitive play. As a competitive title, we know this is going to be a beneficial change for the scene and we hope you are as excited as we are. We sincerely appreciate all of your support and dedication over the years and for contributing to the success of Heroes of Newerth. This is our way of paying that commitment forward and taking our game to the next level.

Flight Gear

– Simulation

There aren’t a lot of good flight simulator games for the Linux platform unlike for Windows. Thank god that Flight Gear is available. The developers of this open source simulation don’t consider it a game because of its realism.

Heroes of Newerth

– Free

The success of DoTA ( a popular mod of Warcraft III) has made HoN equally popular today. This RPG game that offers a similar gameplay experience to DoTA has rich graphics and is fully Linux compatible.

– Free

This is an entertaining MMORPG that’s currently available for the Linux platform. There are 4 different character classes to choose from. The gameplay is set in the world of Wakfu that has four unique nations. The adventure begins when you evolve your character and socialize with other players.

This first person shooter closely resembles Nexuiz. This might be because the former developers of Nexuiz are the ones who created this game. It offers fast paced action and uses the latest Quake engine called DarkPlaces. This game is definitely the best FPS so far in the Linux platform.
