Steam hits a record 14 million concurrent users peak

steam hits a record 14 million concurrent users peak linux mac pc

While the big winter sale is over, Steam has now surpassed 14 million concurrent users. Hence this #milestone hit early #January7 and topped out at 14,207,039, according to the Steam’s #statistics page. Since it is back to a cool 13 million roughly.

While not a surprise to see many Linux games, Dota 2 is still the most played game with the highest concurrent player count. Hitting a recent peak of 951,942 concurrent players. So that means Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will follow, hitting 675,195 players. Since next likely candidate Grand Theft Auto V rounded off the third place with 116,230.

Top games by concurrent player count

  • 951,942 Dota 2
  • 675,195 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • 116,230 Grand Theft Auto V
  • 70,612 Team Fortress 2
  • 71,280 ARK: Survival Evolved
  • 63,709 Rust
  • 68,020 Garry’s Mod
  • 47,130 Warframe
  • 52,083 Sid Meier’s Civilization V
  • 42,492 Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

So it’s worth noting that the majority of the titles outlined have Linux support. Aside from GTA V, Warframe and the yet to be ported Civilization VI.

While stating that concurrent users is not concurrent players. That 14,207,039 number includes users that have Steam running in the background. Either doing other things or away from the PC. I do this a lot, have Steam running all day while doing other things. So these figures are one way to measure Steam’s growth.

So back in 2013, Steam hit 7.5 million concurrent users. While that’s an impressive growth over four years.

While there is no coincidence that January the time when Valve typically hits a user milestones. Seeing it is a few weeks after Christmas and the big Winter Sale. Where more players are sure to have begun using the gaming service.

Rocket League now has 19 million players but no Linux or SteamOS support

The Rocket League developer #Psyonix #announced that there are now 19 million players enjoying the game.

In May, the studio announced it had over 15 million players across Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Details were also revealed the game pulled in $110 million in revenue as of June 2. Not bad, but we still do not have a Linux and SteamOS release. We do know it is still coming but there were promises back in March, details were announced that such ports would be available by the end of the month, but nothing. So we wait…..

Rocket League was released on Windows PC and PlayStation 4 in July 2015 and was also made available on Xbox One in February 2016.

Rocket League has now passed 14 million players but still no Linux and SteamOS support

Rocket League developer #Psyonix has revealed the #game has now passed 14 million #players across all platforms.

Although the number seems significant, it’s not reflective of actual sales. The number of players includes split-screen accounts as well as all players who got the game free with their Steam Controller or PlayStation Plus subscription.

Psyonix revealed this fantastic news earlier through Twitter.

Hoops, the basketball-themed Rocket League mode is expected to be available next week for free. Hopefully we will see the Linux and SteamOS release sometime soon.

Dota 2 now celebrates over 1,000,000 concurrent users

There has been a record set for the Steam community and PC gamers at large. The first game on Steam to see 1,000,000 users playing at once is Dota 2, a free-to-play MOBA that stands near League of Legends in popularity and consistent gameplay. According to sources, the final figure was 1,153,407 today for Dota 2 players playing at one time.

This is good news for Dota 2 and Steam as it clearly shows the game is a resounding success. The one million concurrent numbers figure sort of pales in comparison to what League of Legends regularly shows. That game consistently sees roughly five million concurrent users, and its record is closer to 7.5 million.

The game that comes closest to Dota 2 on Steam is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Holding a record of 420,000 concurrent users.

Video games are a popular way to spend free time. Man, who saw that coming?

Do you play Dota 2 on Linux?
