Independent developer Stunlock Studios announced some signicant news. Since their team arena brawler Battlerite has now officially left Early Access. Also the gams now a full free to play commercial launch on Steam for Windows. To celebrate, the studio even unleashed a launch patch. This features a brand new champion, ‘Thorn.’ While including 200 new items including rare weapons, outfits and victory poses. Even legendary color variations and seven additional music tracks. So you can now unlock and master a roster of powerful champions. Then fight side by side with your teammates in quick skill-based battles. Proving that you deserve to stand victorious in the Battlerite arena.

Hyper Universe might be coming to Linux

Since it is always time for some good intensely fun. Hence the unique side-scrolling action MOBA, Hyper Universe, available now on Steam Early Access for Windows. Since Hyper Universe combines the gameplay found in a side-scrolling action platformer. Along with the highly strategic team-oriented play of a MOBA. Think Awesomenauts but with better character models and fierce gameplay.
So this is one of the games I’ve been keeping an eye on. Currently under development in Unity 3D. Yet the developers might issue a Linux and Ubuntu release.

S2 Games is the publisher of the Free to Play, multiplayer #CollectableCard #Arena #game, Brawl of Ages. Hence the MOBA is now available on Steam. While making news, drawing gaming elements from the more exciting and competitive aspects. Since it is available on Linux, Mac and Windows PC. Expect the gameplay to include other genres, MOBA’s, RTS and Tower Defense.

So in Brawl of Ages, players will get into real-time multiplayer skirmishes. While using decks of cards that compliment the attack and defense of a player’s towers, via grunts. Headup Games #announces in cooperation with the Munich #IcebirdStudios the signing of an exclusive publishing agreement.

In the course of the cooperation Subsiege will be released in early 2017 on STEAM. A precise date will follow soon.

Subsiege previously known as Submerge – is an online #strategy game based on the Unreal Engine 4 which requires skilled controls and complex tactical knowledge in a refreshing and grasping deep sea setting. The game is a new approach to the modern MOBA/RTS playstyle and matches classic RTS with competitive MOBA-gameplay. The ambition is to create a challenging and rewarding gaming experience that demands elaborate maneuvers, skilled reactions and predictive strategies.

The head attraction of Subsiege compared to other representatives of the classic MOBA genre is that you have to control multiple units simultaneously while keeping your eye on the pressure level of your shrinking oxygen resources.

Barricading yourself is no option because you are only able to get hold of the essential resource through active scouting and offensive plays. Command your handpicked squad in an excellent RTS-style while fighting off other players on persistent servers at the same time. But it’s not all about your rivals… The sunken battlegrounds hold their own dangers: Toxic coral reefs, a threatening fauna and deadly creatures of the depth handicap those travelling underwater.

Linux release?

So the likelihood of seeing a native Linux build is fairly certain. Looking at Steam, Headup Games have brought quite a few of their titles to Linux.

Epic Games beta flags user as terrorist

CEO Tim Sweeney of Epic Games’ has #publicly #apologized to a fan, originally blocked from entering the upcoming #Paragon beta test due to sharing the same name as several individuals listed as terrorists by the United States government.

Dr. Khan visited the Paragon website on the weekend to submitted his registration to enter the beta test for the MOBA. The name was immediately flagged by the Specially Designated Nationals List maintained by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

“As part of its enforcement efforts,” the Treasury states on its website, “OFAC publishes a list of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries. It also lists individuals, groups, and entities, such as terrorists and narcotics traffickers designated under programs that are not country-specific.”

“When I went to the website to register for an account, I hit submit and that’s when I faced the red text. I was shocked,” Dr. Khan tells Gamasutra via email. “Initially, I thought I had been hacked. I literally stopped everything and told myself verbally out loud, ‘What the heck?’ I felt dehumanized and discriminated against. Frankly, it hurt.”

Tim Sweeney gave an apology on Twitter and outlined this issue being due to an “overly broad filter related to US trade restrictions.”

Awesomenauts: Overdrive coming to early in 2016 with pre-orders available now

As one of the few #MOBA’s with an easier learning curve, Awesomenauts still has as significant player base, so much so that a new #expansion is in the works. Awesomenauts: Overdrive will arrive early in the new year with premium and free components across Linux, Mac and Windows PC.

Pre-orders are already open for an easy $8.99, coming loaded with three new heroes: Professor Milton Yoolip, a scientist command of mecha-saurs; Chucho Krokk, a bounty hunter riding a hyperbike; and twin babies Jimmy and Amy, that pilot a death-bot.

The whole game will receive substantial tweaks to encourage more team play. Details are limited, other than patch 2.13’s XP and levelling changes being part of similar updates yet to come. Matchmaking is also due for an overhaul and will be setup to assemble a pool of players to match rather than allocating games on a first-come, first-served basis as it does now. Late joining matches are expected to be removed, but games can be re-joined after disconnecting.

The Starstorm Station map is actually playable now in custom matches, but only in a pre-alpha state. So Overdrive will patch this into the mainstream. The big draws for Starstorm are the wormholes and the bottomless space under the map.
And Ix the Interloper, the end result of the autumn’s Design-Your-Naut 2 contest will be added as a free hero. Ix can link to other heroes, healing or damaging them or switching places on command.

Slayers of the Ancients mod turns Dota 2 into a third-person shooter

There are a great deal of impressive #shooters out there with #Linux support, but modder BMD has created a Dota 2 mod that turns the top-down MOBA, into a third-person #CaptureTheFlag game. Probably not the most polished experience it can be, but the video shows that is certainly a solid a work-in-progress, which is a free download in the Steam Workshop.

For those eager to jump in and play, the mod supports 12v12 Capture the Flag only, coming with three hero classes, snipers, juggernauts and shadow fiends. Each class has different weapons and movement abilities, movement speeds and jump skills. Which makes this mod a very likely addition the already established list game changes.

DOTA 2 The Reborn Update coming soon to everyone for Linux, Mac and Windows PC

DOTA 2 is finally making the long awaited transition to #Reborn very soon.

Valve revealed on a blog post outlined they have already been processing the #transition, switching everyone’s game over from Source 1 to the #Source2 engine.

“With The International behind us and the Majors just around the corner, we are excited to have the world start playing Dota in the brand-new Source 2 engine. Within the coming weeks, the main client will receive the DOTA 2 Reborn Update. Moving away from the Source 1 engine soon will allow us to better focus our efforts entirely on Source 2 in preparation for various upcoming tournaments. There are still a few features that will need some work when the update is released, but we plan to finish them quickly. Expect the weeks that follow to focus on ironing out issues, refining the dashboard and iterating based on your feedback. Afterwards, we’ll begin shifting our attention toward the in-game UI, where we plan to redesign the HUD and work on a variety of other in-game features.

Today’s update to Reborn contains various bug fixes and improvements, as well as a large number of backend changes that result in a very large one-time download. Now would be a good time for everyone to start downloading the Reborn update, as you will not need to download it again when the main client receives the update in the coming weeks.

If you do not have the Reborn update installed and would like to get a head start on it now, launch the Dota client and head over to the Play Tab to get set up. All of your items are now in the Reborn client, and after today any new content will be added directly to Source 2 only.”

This move to Source 2 will free up a great deal of Valve’s time to focus more on tournaments, but for players, this may not improve the game experience. So, when everyone gets their Reborn DOTA 2, this will not be a single game but a freely available game development platform.

Players will be able to dig into DOTA 2’s toolset and make their own games. Which can be playable with other DOTA 2 players via the Custom Game Tab.

Obviously everyone is getting into mod tools and game development tools, giving Valve another platform for everyone to get into game creation.

The multi-million dollar tournament is being partially #crowdfunded again this year by sales of the Compendium.

The Compendium website now shows the total prize pool has topped $4 million, unlocking a Mini Pudge companion.

Valve’s original stake was $600,000; the rest of the funds are have been raised by the $2.50 pot contribution from the $10 Compendium cover price.

That’s over 1,360,000 sales since the scheme launched last week.

Wow.

Valve has stretch goals in place right up till $6 million – which suddenly seems perfectly reasonable given

The high cost of game development and indie game developers

There have been a number of changes in the industry regarding “free to play” games and the development costs that go with them. Games like League of Legends have become an industry standard in MOBA’s, while others like DOTA 2 are taking up more challenging multiplayer experiences. Creating a competition in loyalties between both game titles.

In recent news, Hi-Rez have been on helm of making it big in terms of a “free to play” games. The first-person aspect of Smite, another MOBA that is not only challenging, but also faces up to its significant development costs.
Erez Goren, CEO, has been discussing their risks at Hi-Rez and admitted to personally funded the studio’s game development to the sum of $30 million, while only generating around $10 million in revenue from their earlier titles, Tribes and Global Agenda.

“The first and most important thing to note is that MOST games fail (remember that most people tend to remember the ones that did well), SOME games break even, and a tiny number of games are very successful. That’s the nature of the gaming industry. So for every WoW, LoL, CoD, and TF2 there are hundreds of games that are dead,” said Goren.

“Global Agenda was our first game and it lost a lot of money. It was not a total loss since we did build significant technology and platforms that would help us develop our next games (Tribes & Smite). We continued to fund Global Agenda for more than a year after it was released and losing money, we continued to create content and new features but no matter how much work we did the user base kept declining.”

Hi-Rez are presently working on MOBA title Smite, which is currently in a closed beta. Goren countered claims that the company was milking players of Tribes: Ascend to fund the creation of Smite by claiming that without developing a new title, the studio and servers for its titles would have closed.

In no way does this mean game developers have to endure such a high stakes risk. Even though any game would be facing uncertainty to compete with the major AAA titles.
Which is to say, its independent game developers that are making those changes in the industry, by their willingness to take the plunge, produce innovative designs, and use concepts that are significantly impacting the market. And, its taking place on multiple platforms, from Linux, Mac, PC, and on to next-generation consoles, tablets, and hand-held devices. Something both League of Legends and Smite could learn a thing or two from.

While independent developers are using Kickstarter and Indiegogo to bring a project to reality, a rather common occurrence. Another MOBA title, Aweseomauts from Ronimo Games, have been spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign to ensure their next big endeavour would be well received by the market. Giving the public a heads-up and the opportunity to participate/pledge on the project and prolonging the life of the game.
This method seems to be generating a whole new generation of game developers that are not only out-performing new titles but also outsmarting them in the process. And its in no way cheating.

Simply using the resources at hand and making the endeavour to do something different. This is the way of the cross-platform game developer.

Strife from S2 Games' will be coming to PAX Prime 2013

S2 Games has revealed that their new MOBA, Strife, will be available to play at this year’s PAX Prime taking place from August 30 to September 2.

S2 Games, developers of the free-to-play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) Heroes of Newerth, today announced that they will be revealing their new MOBA, Strife, to the public for the first time at this year’s PAX Prime expo in Seattle. From August 30 – September 2, Strife will be available to play and team members from S2 will be conducting demos of the game at booth #352 in the main hall. Monday, Sept. 2 will feature special guest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator, Kevin Eastman who will reveal an exclusive preview of the Strife comic he and S2 have been working on. Eastman will be available for a signing and to answer questions.


Along with the playable game, the booth will feature behind-the-scene looks at Strife’s development, with live Q&A’s, discussions, and presentations each day of the show. There will also be plenty of giveaways for those who stop by, including exclusive preview versions of the comic.
