Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty creator discusses growth and game budgets

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty creator #LorneLanning shares some insight on how #capitalism encourages constant, exponential growth and massive game budgets with a Game Industry. Alternatively, #developers should cater to niche audiences, making games for smaller, dedicated communities.

“As craftsmen, ” Lanning said,”our opportunity lies in finding the niches where we know our audience, we focus on it, we listen to it, we respect it, we treat it with some grace.”

Once a happy floor waxer in Oddworld’s biggest meat processing plant, Abe stumbles across his boss’s secret plan to turn the factory’s slave labor force into the latest in the RuptureFarms Tasty Treats line of novelty meat snacks. Abe now has to save his own skin from the grinders, but simply escaping the flesh farm is only the start of his Oddysee – for many dangers await Abe on his journey to discover his destiny.

Built from scratch from the ground up, enjoy new breathtaking visuals, enhanced audio and improved, deeper gameplay as New ‘n’ Tasty reignites the original Oddworld game using the latest next-generation technology.

Amazing new graphics

With art direction from series creator Lorne Lanning, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty offers a view into Oddworld with fidelity never seen before. Fluid animation, new free-moving cameras and high resolution (up to 4K) visuals make RuptureFarms and the surrounding areas look incredible, creating the Oddworld that Lanning always wanted to see.

Revamped controls

Analog controls offer more subtle control over Abe, and new tricks like free aiming, the ability to drop grenades behind you and also sneak whilst crouching open up new avenues for stealthy tactics and inventive speed-running. Optional ‘Old School’ controls bring back hopping and digital movement too, so the Oddysee purists can get started with some familiarity.

Brand new areas, brand new secrets

From the murky grime of RuptureFarms to the expansive native lands of the Monsaic Lines, through to the vast temples of Scrabania and Paramonia, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty boasts new areas, subtle gameplay changes and a few surprises. Fans will recognise the huge meat grinders, Scrab holding pens and cavernous caves, but there’s more than enough that’s new here to keep you on your toes.

Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty will be released on Steam for Linux, Mac and Windows PC on February the 25th. Both Alf’s Escape and the Scrub Abe costume pack will be available on launch.

Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty developers issue update

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty publisher Oddworld Inhabitants has been pretty quiet about other #announced versions of the #game, following the release of the PS4 version in July. Now the team released a massive update concerning all versions.

Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty developers issue update for upcoming release

The publisher posted a detailed blog about the #Linux, Mac and Windows PC versions, the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions, the Xbox One version and the Wii U version.

Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty Linux, Mac and Windows PC versions

Oddworld explained that it had recently showcased the full PC version of Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty in Manchester in October, but the game is not yet fully optimised for all hardware, and as such it is still a couple of months away from release. This version will come with graphics options, controller support and rebindable keys. No date just yet, but it will take at least a couple more months, though here may be a closed beta on Steam in the near future.

PlayStation 3 and Vita versions

“Fitting the expansive worlds of Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty into the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita has proved to be something of a challenge. The relatively limited RAM available to us has meant we’re having to break down some of the huge scrolling areas seen in the PC and PS4 versions whilst ensuring we retain the same great gameplay,” reads the update

“We’re keen to have the PS3 version running smoothly at 720p and the PS Vita version at its native resolution, but this isn’t without some degree of difficulty. We know PS3 and PS Vita owners are desperate to get their hands on the game, but please rest assured we’re doing everything we can to make this happen to get it onto the PlayStation Store as soon as possible.”

The blog adds that there will be more news to share on those versions in the coming weeks.

Pre-order Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty and get extra level, costume

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty pre-orders will include two #free add-ons: a special outfit and an extra level, publisher Oddworld Inhabitants announced today.

North American pre-order customers will receive an alternate costume, Scrub Abe, that consists of a factory cleaner’s garb. That pre-order bonus will be available on launch day, while Alf’s Escape, a new area of RuptureFarms, will be released shortly after launch. Alf’s Escape offers some challenging puzzles that will “ensure a fresh challenge for even the most seasoned Oddworld fans,” according to Oddworld Inhabitants, along with some dialogue recorded just for that level.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty will cost $29.99 in North America, and Oddworld Inhabitants has reduced the price in the U.K. and Europe to bring it in line with the North American price: The game will cost £17.99 in the U.K. and €20.99 in Europe, the company announced today. Customers in those regions will be able to get the Scrub Abe costume and Alf’s Escape mission as long as they’re PlayStation Plus subscribers and buy the game within two weeks of its release date.

Developed by Just Add Water, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty will be available July 22 in North America and July 23 in the U.K. and Europe on PlayStation 4. Oddworld Inhabitants is planning to allow pre-order customers to download the game “a day or two early” and start playing at midnight on their respective launch days.

The company is supporting Sony’s cross-buy program, so buying New ‘n’ Tasty on PS4 will also unlock PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita copies of the game and bonus DLC once those versions are released. Oddworld Inhabitants said today that it is “still trying to launch the PS3 and Vita versions as soon as possible after the PS4 version.” New ‘n’ Tasty is also in development on Linux, Mac, Wii U, Windows PC and Xbox One; the publisher noted that the two aforementioned add-ons will be available on other platforms.
