The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux release – Linux and Mac

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux release - Linux and Mac

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter received hints of possibly being ported to Linux around August 2014, but details were released about the Redux using Unreal Engine 4 back in July this year. Now it looks like more content has surfaced in a recent blog update outlining Linux and Mac ports.

The Astronauts just released The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux version on PC,  a stunning game just ported to Unreal Engine 4 from Unreal Engine 3. This may have proved to be a difficult job, but this opens the door to better native Linux support.

“UE4 is future proof, and now so is Ethan. It should be easier for us to support new platforms as they emerge, or to attempt supporting already existing platforms like Mac or Linux (we will look into those right after the release),” outlined in The Astronauts developer blog.

Also, the original game used infrequent checkpoint save system, while the Redux “simply saves the state of the whole world right after most player actions”. And the backtracking players could face at the end of the game has been changed too, “Let’s just say that we believe the problem was fully eliminated in the Redux version.” Meaning, there are some rather significant improvements in the game.

Now we should see some form of Linux support on Steam. This may not be a full out confirmation of the game will be ported, but it is likely a strong possibility being that The Astronauts are looking to make the attempt. Given the Steam Machines release is just around the corner, this is no surprise, the developers are likely to “attempt supporting already existing platforms like Mac or Linux” for the upcoming console debut. And why not, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a very impressive title.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is an Unreal Engine 4 remaster of the original game. This is a free game for the current and future owners of the original release.
