5 Must Have Linux Games

Gaming on Linux? This might have been a foreign concept on this system many years ago but today it is possible. The system has evolved in such a way that there are now high quality games that you can play with. Let’s take a look at 5 of the best Linux based games that you should try.

Oil Rush

– Real Time Strategy
– $19.99

I know that there are lots of gamers who love RTS style games. Oil Rush is a naval strategy game that combines elements of RTS as well as tower defense. It has amazing graphics and offers an enjoyable gameplay.

Flight Gear

– Simulation
– Free

There aren’t a lot of good flight simulator games for the Linux platform unlike for Windows. Thank god that Flight Gear is available. The developers of this open source simulation don’t consider it a game because of its realism.

Heroes of Newerth

– Free

The success of DoTA ( a popular mod of Warcraft III) has made HoN equally popular today. This RPG game that offers a similar gameplay experience to DoTA has rich graphics and is fully Linux compatible.

– Free

This is an entertaining MMORPG that’s currently available for the Linux platform. There are 4 different character classes to choose from. The gameplay is set in the world of Wakfu that has four unique nations. The adventure begins when you evolve your character and socialize with other players.

– Free

This first person shooter closely resembles Nexuiz. This might be because the former developers of Nexuiz are the ones who created this game. It offers fast paced action and uses the latest Quake engine called DarkPlaces. This game is definitely the best FPS so far in the Linux platform.

Oil Rush Review

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has posted a review of Oil Rush, the naval-themed real-time strategy game recently released for Linux by Unigine that praises the game’s mechanics and originality:

In these suprisingly roleplaying-heavy times, something as laser-focused strategic as this is entirely welcome. It’s a proper, honest-to-god RTS – but, delightfully uncommonly, it doesn’t bow slavishly to the C&C or Total War thrones. Were my thumbs not too bust helping to type these very words, I would certainly hold at least one of them aloft.

OpenRA, Free and Open Source RTS Game Engine Supporting C&C and C&C: Red Alert

OpenRA is a free and open source real time strategy game engine supporting early Westwood games like Command & Conquer (C&C) and Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

Almost an year back, I tried OpenRA but couldn’t get it to work. Recently I gave it a shot again and was pleasantly surprised at the level of polish.

The game is absolute pleasure to play. The graphics may look a bit dated but they have their own charm. Gameplay is as addicting as it used to be and brings back old memories. Check out the video below:

OpenRA can be currently played as online multiplayer game only. However, you can create a single player game by selecting bots as enemy opponents with three different AIs (easy, medium, hard).

If you have original Red Alert files, you can use them with OpenRA. But, they are not necessary. Both original C&C: Red Alert and C&C has been recreated as mods and can be downloaded from game menu itself. They are not just clones of the original versions but provide improved and rebalanced gameplay.

Download OpenRA (Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora Packages
