Mobile Games will have Twitch Broadcasting Available Soon

Twitch broadcasting comes to mobile gaming

The Twitch Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK) will allow mobile game players to become active broadcasters.

Video platform Twitch announced today a #game development tool designed for broadcasting, capturing, and archiving of mobile games. Twitch Mobile Software Development Kit (#SDK) will expand the use of the Twitch mobile app for #Android and #iOS. Giving gamers the opportunity to share their Humble Mobile Bundle 4 gaming over Twitch.

Twitch reported the mobile app has been downloaded over 10 million times; however, the current app allows users only to view game streams. The SDK for mobile devices will give users the ability to stream their mobile games. Twitch already offers an SDK for consoles and PC developers.

“Our vision is to provide the Twitch community with the ability not only to view, but to broadcast live video game content wherever they are, whether they’re on the go or in the living room,” Twitch marketing executive Matthew DiPietro said in the press release. “We’ve achieved that with our PC and console integrations, so the trifecta will soon be complete with our deep and concerted foray into mobile broadcasting.”

Like the console and PC SDK features, the Twitch Mobile SDK will offer multiple features, including the ability to capture and broadcast gameplay video and audio, video capture from the mobile device’s front-facing camera, audio capture via an internal or external microphone, video archiving and sharing, toggling of broadcast quality, chat options, and discovery of related broadcasts.

Kickstarter – STEM System Puts Virtual Reality in Your Hands

Immersive virtual reality could be much closer than we think, if a Kickstarter for a wireless motion controller posted Thursday meets its goals.

The STEM System is a wireless, modular motion tracking control system developed by Sixense. It will allow PC, Mac and Linux games to track the player’s position with up to five points on the body.

While earlier versions of this motion controller system are available for the Razer Hydra controller, it’s the first time the system is wireless, according to the Kickstarter page. The goal of the Kickstarter is to get the wireless STEM System into developers’ hands so they can create games for it.

The STEM System consists of several parts: STEM units that fit into the controller or pack, STEM base that manages all pieces, STEM controller featuring an analog joystick, buttons and bumpers and a STEM Pack that attaches to the player’s legs, head or torso. That means the STEM could track all of the player’s limbs as well as his or her head and body while playing a game. To see how this could look, check out this indie prototype in which the creator strapped half of a Razer Hydra to his chest to simulate ducking behind cover while taking fire.

The STEM system is natural fit for the Oculus Rift, the still-in-development virtual reality headset that also harnessed Kickstarter last year to spur developer interest. There are several interesting projects in the works using the Rift, including a space combat game by EVE Online developer CCP Games. The SDK is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

The Kickstarter campaign already passed $150,000 within the first couple hours of launch, 60% of the project’s $250,000 goal.

Valve’s Source SDK 2013 now supports Linux, OS X and Oculus Rift

Valve is keeping its promise of opening up to gamers on Linux. The company recently released the latest of its Source software development kit, Source SDK 2013, which now supports Linux in addition to Windows and Mac OS X. Besides this, Valve has also added support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in this edition of the SDK. Get the SDK here.

The Source SDK can be used to develop new game mods. The support for Linux means game mods can now build and run clients on Linux computers. Before this version, game mods were only supported on Windows despite games being available across platforms. Dedicated servers are now supported on Linux too.

Looks like good days are coming for gamers using Linux

Valve has made a lot of changes in the new SDK, the biggest being the entire source code is now hosted on Github. The company has also changed the license that makes it easier for developers to share their mods and changes to the SDK.

Apart from that, modding tools such as Hammer—used for modelling and level design—will now ship with their respective games, not with the Source SDK. The launcher is also being phased out, and Valve says it will “disappear from your Tools list”. Instead, you will have to navigate to where the tools are stored as batch files and launch them. The SDK launcher is no longer used for this purpose.

Steam’s new delivery service, Steam Pipe, is now supported by the sample mods, and existing mods’ gameinfo.txt can be changed to match the new format to support Steam Pipe support.

As for the Oculus Rift support, you will have to run compatible mods with “-vr” on the command line to enable head tracking and run the mod in stereo on the virtual reality headset. Valve added Oculus Rift support to Team Fortress and Half Life 2 earlier this year.

Bryan Lunduke's Projects To Go Open Source

Linux Tycoon developer Bryan Lunduke announced plans to move to an open source, donation-supported business model for all of his released titles.

“During this process I am making regular (multiple times per day) updates and trying to keep everything documented and transparent,” Lunduke explains. “In this way I hope to provide a solid case-study on moving a proprietary software business to Open Source — In the hope that others can follow and do the same.”

To fund full-time development, Lunduke requires monthly donations totaling $4,000. If Lunduke successfully raises $4,000 over the next week, he will make Illumination Software Creator, Linux Tycoon, BLABA, 2299: THE GAME, Radical Comic Designer, and The Lunduke SDK open source projects.

Donations (both one-time and subscription-based) can be made at Lunduke’s website.


Tizen SDK Beta, Source Code Available

Tizen, the Moblin-Maemo-MeeGo offspring, has seen its release of its SDK, the SDK source-code, the Tizen Web UI framework, and the Tizen Web API as beta. The developers still plan to have a final Tizen release out in the second quarter of this year.

The Tizen SDK provides support for Windows and Ubuntu while the source-code to it is available so it could in fact be ported to other platforms.

The widget-oriented Tizen Web UI framework is an extension of jQuery Mobile. The Tizen Web API has picked up new features as well for doing matters like accessing an alarm, accessing media content, retrieving system information, and more.

Tizen isn’t yet ready for use in a production capacity, but they’re still targeting a Q2’2012 release.
