Major League Gaming introduces Pro Points player-ranking system

Major League Gaming Championship event in Dallas.

North America’s most prominent competitive-gaming organization is taking another step in its plans to dominate the market.

Major League Gaming announced today that it will introduce a new method of tracking and ranking player performance across the games it supports. The association is using a new system called Pro Points that it will award to anyone playing in its Pro Circuit events, online tournaments, and online ladders.

The points will apply to all MLG games, that includes Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Gears of War: Judgment, NBA 2K13, FIFA Soccer 13, Dota 2, and Madden NFL 25. The top 2 percent in terms of Pro Points in each game are automatically MLG Pros.

MLG will use the Pro Points to seed the brackets at major tournaments. That includes the next Pro Circuit Championship event coming up in Columbus, Ohio in November. The league will also use the Pro Points ladder to decide who it gets called in for invite-only tournaments.

Pro Points rankings will begin on Aug. 4. Starting about a week later, the company will begin publishing the first Pro Points rankings for each game, and it will update those rankings every two weeks.

This ranking method should introduce more competition to events outside of the MLG Championship stops. It should also make it easier for casual MLG followers to keep track of teams.
