After a lot of complaints about Skype on Linux, Microsoft is finally done something about it, #launching a #newversion. Today an Alpha version was announced which Linux users can #download right now in a DEB or RPM package.
This new Skype app on Linux includes all of the basic features, but is not yet fully functional. Microsoft did redesign the user interface to provide a faster and more responsive experience, which was one of the main issues with the predecessor on Linux. Additionally, the new app also features the basic features such as sharing files, photos, videos, send emojis, etc. But things like Settings and further configuration is somewhat limited.

However, it also appears Microsoft is just using Skype Web on the Linux app, which is the same as what users get on the web. In this blog post, Microsoft stated:

“Today, we’re pleased to announce the launch of the Alpha version of a new Skype for Linux client. As you may have guessed by the name, Skype for Linux Alpha is not a fully functioning Skype client yet. We’re sharing it with you now, as we want to get it in your hands as soon as possible. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll notice that it’s very different from the Skype for Linux client you use today. For example, you’ll be using the latest, fast and responsive Skype UI, you can share files, photos and videos and send a whole new range of new emoticons.

As we develop this new version of Skype for Linux, we need you to test, provide feedback and help us prioritize features. You will notice that with the Alpha version of Skype for Linux, which uses our next generation calling architecture, you will be able to call your friends and family on the latest versions of Skype on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, but you won’t be able to make or receive calls to and from the previous versions of Skype for Linux (4.3.0.37). Please do provide as much feedback as you can on Skype for Linux Alpha, so we can continue to improve call connections and reliability.”

Also announced, support for voice calls for Chromebook and Linux users now. Bui if you are a gamer that uses Skype over say the experimental Discord or even Teamspeak, download Skype for Linux Alpha DEB here or Skype for Linux Alpha RPM here.

The state of Batman: Arkham Knight and the upcoming re-release of the game

For players waiting to #buy Batman: Arkham Knight on #Linux, the wait is still underway but the PC re-release is not far off.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment dropped hint of the game’s PC re-release in the press #release for the new Tumbler and Arkham Asylum skins DLC.

“Batman: Arkham Knight is based on DC Comics’ core Batman license and is available now for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft. The PC version of the game will be available in the coming weeks.”

This may not be a definitive date, but considering the size of the recent patch, the game should be ready for re-release very soon.

The sales of the Batman: Arkham Knight PC version were suspended back in June, both digitally and at retail. This came after reports of the release having incredibly poor performance, with only a few people being able to play the game successfully. And there is no word on whether Windows PC players will be compensated for the long wait.

As for the Linux release, Feral Interactive do not have an official statement regarding development, but it would be safe to say the delay of the Windows PC release has set the dev team back. So the sooner the re-release takes place, the greater our chances of seeing that Linux release.

1.07 patch released for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

1.07 patch released for the witcher3 the wild hunt

#CDProjektRed’s huge 1.07 patch for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has rolled out today, the developer confirmed by #fixing a massive list of #bugs and other issues, giving players an alternative movement style for Geralt (just go to the GameplayMovement Response submenu).

The developer released the complete list of patch fixes in the Changelog and they are indeed extensive. While the update is 7.3GB in size it does contain new storage locations and better organization options for books.

The latest patch for the open-world adventure game is already going out to all versions of the game. Community lead Marcin Momot tweeted earlier, that the patch will go out for all versions of the game within 24 hours.

If this is any sign of what is to come from CD Projekt Red, the development team are putting some serious effort into the AAA title. Linux Game News has not heard any further details about the Linux release, as the team are still keeping quiet about the port.
