Dex a 2D, side-scrolling, open-world cyberpunk RPG released for Linux, Mac and Windows PC

The 2D cyberpunk action RPG, Dex from developers Dreadlocks just released for Linux, Mac, Windows PC and will also be coming to OUYA and Wii U very soon. As a side-scrolling, open-world cyberpunk RPG the focus is on exploration and non-linear gameplay.  Which is rather impressive for a side-scroller.

Previously funded on Kickstarter way back in December 2013, the title has actually been available through the Steam Early Access Program since August 2014.

  • Rare melding of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions meld with hand-drawn characters, animations, and locations, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
  • Multiple solutions to problems: Operate in cyberspace or normal reality. Overcome obstacles using skills, weapons, special equipment…
  • Meaningful character progression choices: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
  • Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
  • Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
  • Rich game world and mindful level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
  • Full voice acting: Interactive dialogues using hand-drawn sprite animations, fully voice-acted by professional actors.

The open-world RPG is al about uncovering the truth behind an AI, “who is striving to reach the Singularity, an ‘event horizon’. Where the Artificial Intelligence will surpass human intelligence and all bets about the future will be off.” How you explore and learn about Harbor Prime, the futuristic city, the title is designed as a tribute to classic cyberpunk games from the 90s.

As the first game from developers Dreadlocks, an independent studio based in Prague, Czech Republic, founded back in 2011.

Dex is available on Steam and Humble Bundle for Linux, Mac, Windows PC and soon to be OUYA and Wii U.

3D Platformer Yooka-Laylee exceeds stretch goals on Kickstarter

Yesterday we brought you news about the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for the Banjo-Kazooie successor called Yooka-Laylee. Released by the team of former #Rare #developers, the project hit its #funding goal of £175,000 very quickly. Now a full day later, the Kickstarter crushed the target and stretch goals, raising over £1 million, or roughly $1.5 million USD.
Which means, since Playtonic Games hit that goal, Yooka-Laylee will be released on the same day for Linux, Mac, Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U!

“Obviously we would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone who has backed the project so far. Our intention from the beginning was to use Kickstarter as a means to improve Yooka-Laylee, and you’ve helped us shape it into one fine specimen. ,” Playtonic Games said in a Kickstarter update.

Once the Kickstarter page went live, backers started throwing money at the projectright away, leaving zero doubt as to whether the final goal would be met. “Backers can be assured that the Playtonic team will deliver a complete and satisfying game package. However, given the opportunity and additional resources required, we have a list of additional ‘dream’ extras we’d love to incorporate.”

The Yooka-Laylee campaign still has 45 days left to go, and as of press time, 31,228 backers have pledged £1,095,766. So it looks like we could have another Kickstarter record similar to Mighty No. 9, so get your pledges in.

Yooka-Laylee 3D platformer now live on Kickstarter for Linux, Mac and Windows PC

Formerly known as Project Ukulele, Yooka-Laylee is the first game from #PlaytonicGames, a new studio formed by several veterans of acclaimed developer Rare. The Kickstarter campaign for the Banjo-Kazooie successor, a #3D #platformer called Yooka-Laylee is now live. Played in the likes of a “buddy-duo” such as Banjo-Kazooie, but instead of a bear and a bird, the title features a chameleon and a bat.

Now the Yooka-Laylee page is live, we know quite a bit more about the game. Yooka’s tongue grapple and Laylee’s tactical sonar blast gives players the freedom to explore and expand the gorgeous 3D worlds drawn by esteemed environment artist Steven Hurst (Banjo-Kazooie series, Viva Pinata). Using your skill, discover the plethora of delicious collectibles hidden within the world. While developer Playtonic also teases about what “may or may not be a move involving a giant fart bubble,” putting it in-line with the humour vibe the developers are going for.

We do know there will be five worlds to explore. Players can expand these levels by spending collectibles, called Pagies. These golden collectibles are the main currency in the game and scattered within the world, either on the ground and in the air. Also hidden in game worlds are arcade machines, with mini-games based on “old-school gaming goodness.” When you beat them, they reward you with Pagies to unlock and expand new worlds.

Another gameplay element is the “Play Tonic” system. These unique modifiers are used to customize gameplay to suit your style. Will you run faster, hit harder or fly further? Also, are they named after our studio or vice versa?

Yooka-Laylee will also feature a soundtrack by David Wise and Grant Kirkhope, a former Rare veterans known for work on the Donkey Kong Country and of course the Banjo-Kazooie franchises.

As of now, Yooka-Laylee’s funding goal has been met, the game will be release for Linux, Mac, Windows PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U. The Linux, Mac, and Windows PC versions are due to release in October 2016, with PlayStation 4 and Wii U editions coming later. Should $1 million be raised, all versions will ship at the same time.  There are also plans to include extras like art books, and a special ’64-bit’ special edition, a throwback to the team’s N64 pedigree.

Playtonic launched the Kickstarter today, so you can be backer and to pick up the finished copy of the PC version for$15 / £10. There are also plans to include extras like soundtracks, art books, and a special ’64-bit’ special edition, a callback to the team’s N64 pedigree. While you will need to pay $22 to get a console copy.

Gameplay Background for Animal Gods

Having researched mysteries, mythology and folklore surrounding these areas. There’s a good bit of fiction and fantasy but all of the fiction is grounded in reality. Grounded in History and established folklore. For instance — there are some fictional dungeons and temples you explore in Animal Gods. From a gameplay perspective, that means things can stay abstract and lead to fun level design. Whereas key story pieces & scripted events can surround Stonehenge and some other famous places you will discover.

Some games have epic origin stories. If you would like to, imagine Animal Gods as a game idea that was given to Still Games by the squawking specter of a raven that rose from the ashes of our 7th birthday party. A sight that divinely haunts us for ages, inspiring the pursuit of the noble path of indie game development.

Animal Gods‘ real story is simple. A self-funded title that needs your support to continue the outpouring of commitment into its development. The game will be released for Linux, Mac and Windows PC.  And Still Games are also verified by Nintendo to develop for the Nintendo Wii U!

Warlocks a new side-scrolling game on Kickstarter for Linux, Mac and Windows PC

Warlocks side-scrolling game on Kickstarter for Linux Mac Windows PC

There’s a lot of things that make Polish #indie game #developer Max Strzelecki different from you and I.

For instance, Strzelecki is a highly capable programmer. The 21-year old has been working at his craft since he was 14 with his friend and business partner Dushan Chaciej. College, Strzelecki says, isn’t all that challenging for him now. That’s part of the reason why he’s launched a Kickstarter to fund his first commercial game, called Warlocks for Linux, Mac, Windows PC, and Wii U.
