Double Fine Productions Chooses Moai Game Development Platform as Basis for Double Fine Adventure

The world’s most successfully crowd-funded game to be released for iOS, Android, Mac, PC and Linux using Moai SDK and Moai Cloud.

Zipline Games today announced that Double Fine Adventure, the widely anticipated and community-backed adventure game by Double Fine Productions, is being developed on the Moai Platform. Double Fine Adventure made history in March by raising more than $3.3 million from fans and backers on Kickstarter.com, more than doubling the previous Kickstarter project funding record.

Shadowrun Returns: $1 million in pledges guarantee Linux port

With the recent announcement of a Mac port, the Linux community has come out asking whether Shadowrun Returns will support Linux. Harebrained has said it doesn’t want to overreach, so that version has been off the table until now.

“As we said over the weekend, we’re being very careful not to over-commit to ideas and features (especially just to get more funding),” the Kickstarter post update reads. But with $1 million, the developer is confident it can outsource the port to a trusted studio and offer a Linux version shortly after launch. Zipline Games has already built Linux support into Moai, the development environment used by Harebrained Schemes to create Shadowrun Returns.

If the $1 million goal is met, all $15 backers will have access to the Linux port of Shadowrun Returns when it’s ready.

Zipline Games today announced production availability and pricing of its Moai game development platform, including a new suite of Moai Direct Services offering the benefits of cloud-based data storage, cross-platform leaderboards and achievements, and actionable in-game news and push notifications to any existing iOS or Android game. The Moai platform has attracted over 6,000 game developers during its public beta period, including notable mobile games companies with millions of mobile games installed: DistinctDev (creators of The Moron Test), Bungie Aerospace, Harebrained Schemes (Crimson: Steam Pirates), Go Go Kiddo, and Nay Games. New Moai 1.0 features include real-time monitoring, rich event logging, and enhanced security for all game services in the cloud, plus an updated open-source Moai SDK that’s been hardened for over 500 Android devices, expanded with isometric rendering options, and enhanced to support worldwide languages. DistinctDev, creator of the mega-hit franchise The Moron Test, recently built The Moron Test 2 with the Moai platform and released it for iOS, Android, and the Amazon App Store. DistinctDev has always pursued a multi-platform strategy, having worked with outside vendors to port the original Moron Test title collection to 8 different platforms as separate native apps. Using Moai, DistinctDev has accelerated game design and development, brought all programming for The Moron Test 2 back in house, and delivered their first simultaneous iOS/Android release.

GDC Online: Zipline Games’ Moai Platform To Support Google Chrome

Zipline Games announced today that its Lua-based Moai game development platform will now support Google’s Native Client SDK, allowing developers to launch their games via the Chrome Web Store as browser-based applications.

This Moai update, detailed at this week’s GDC Online show in Austin, will coincide with the next stable version of Google Chrome, which includes support for OpenGL ES 2.0.

“Native Client is huge,” said Zipline CEO Todd Hopper. “We’ve talked to a dozen web-based social game developers who are ramping up mobile development efforts, and we know very successful iOS and Android game developers who are planning for web distribution of their titles.”

“Moai support for Google’s Native Client SDK gives both of these groups a terrific alternative to full game ports for each new platform. We’re very pleased to see Google leading in this area by supporting Native Client and OpenGL in Chrome,” he said.

Earlier this year, ex-Microsoft Games Studios vice president Shane Kim joined Zipline Games’ board of directors to advise the company on developing the Moai platform and forging new studio partnerships.

The Moai game development platform went into open beta this July, and has been used for titles such as HareBrained Schemes’ Crimson: Steam Pirates and Nay Games’ iOS title Bubble Ball.
