An update has been released to Wargus, an open-source version of the Warcraft II game that was originally released back in the 90’s.
Pali Rohár has taken over the Wargus project as the open-source version of Blizzard’s Warcraft II. It works under Linux too. However, you do need a copy of the game’s CD for Wargus to work as it relies upon the original game assets. Besides running natively on Windows and Linux, there’s been Wargus ports to the Nokia N900 (Maemo), PocketPC, GP2X, Windows Mobile Phone, and Android, among other platforms.
Below is the email that Pali sent into Phoronix about the new open-source update.
Open source clone of Blizzard game Warcraft II exixts for more then 10 years. First it was ALE Clone, then it was renamed to Freecraft. After problem with Blizzard with name Freecraft, engine and scripts was devided into projects Stratagus (engine for strategic games) and Wargus (scripts & data extractor for Stratagus with WAR2).
In 2007 was projects halted by Stratagus developers, they moved to their open source strategy game BosWars. Last year I found that old dead projects and I started fixing problems and know bugs. I registred projects pages on launchpad and some original and new developers joined.
Now after more then year of work I released new version of Stratagus and Wargus. Stratagus as “generic engine for strategy games” and Wargus as “WAR2 dataset & lua scripts” for Stratagus could be stable again. Wargus needs original WAR2 CD for graphics & sounds files.
Stratagus working fine on Windows and Linux. Also Maemo 5 device Nokia N900 is supported.
There is project Stargus – scripts for Starcraft I, which is not complete.
I think this is still usefull for linux users interested in some old very good games and Wargus is I think 95% working clone of original DOS game.
