Wasteland 2 To Run On Unity Game Engine

Unity game engine is getting a Linux port

Wasteland 2, the very successful Kickstarter game project as the sequel to the two-decade-old Wasteland RPG, will be running on the Unity Engine with its Linux client included.

Brian Fargo, the mastermind behind Wasteland and the one that finally turned to Kickstarter to finance the post-apocalyptic role-playing video game, has revealed on Twitter, “I can officially announce that we’ve chosen the Unity engine for Wasteland 2. It meets all the criteria we need. First screens looking good.”

In a later tweet by Fargo, “We have been supplied the source code to Unity for the express purpose of making the Linux version.” The Unity engine at present isn’t powering any Linux games, but there’s long been talk of a Linux port for this game engine, which looks like now will finally materialize.

One of the other game engines in the mix to try to power Wasteland 2 was Unigine.

While Unity and Wasteland 2 on Linux are exciting, the official release of the game isn’t expected until late 2013.
