Carmageddon Reincarnation update for Linux

carmageddon reincarnation update ensures linux and mac ports

A generation of gamers coming to the end of a decade of 2D, wireframe, and corridor #combat, it was an awesome introduction to the concept of the “real” 3D #openworld, do-whatever-you-want #gameplay, Carmageddon Reincarnation. And in doing so it also introduced the gaming world to the whole concept of realistic physics and real-time dynamic damage.

Stainless Games decided to  remake of the original title with the support of backers in the successful Kickstarter. This was a unique and yet to be explored idea, but nothing is available with the same reputation of mayhem.

Stainless also outlined Linux support and now the developers have issued a Kickstarter update explaining that native support has not be abandoned.

“We are continuing to work on improvements in a number of key areas, including the long-awaited faster level loading times and further significant performance improvements. So, we’ll continue to roll out updates over the course of the coming months, and more details of dates and what to expect will follow. We will also have updated news on the scheduling of the Mac & Linux versions of Carmageddon Reincarnation.”

And relive all the mangling mayhem with a fabulously updated Action Replay System, with multiple cameras and replay options – it will mean you never miss a pile-up again! Get those movies online and brag about your ped culling achievements. And there will be plenty of THOSE too – oh yes… Achievements, Challenges and Collectibles to hunt down, that’ll keep the whole family entertained for hour upon happy blood and oil splattered hour.

Carmageddon Reincarnation Mac and Linux versions confirmed

Stainless Games announced they have not only reached their Kickstarter goal for their “Reincarnation” of the long lost race franchise Carmageddon, but they’ve also surpassed it. The studio only needed $400,000 to develop another edition of the supremely gory racing game, but they managed to raise more than $625,000 in their allotted deadline. They even managed to sell the three $10,000 donation slots, earning those donors a trip to the UK to Stainless Studios where developers will create their likeness and story in the new game as an opponent.

Mac and Linux versions of Carmageddon Reincarnation are confirmed after its Kickstarter ended with 156 per cent of its target raised.

In addition to a copy of the game backers receive rewards ranging from t-shirts to posters, miniature models of the game’s cars to a chance to appear in the game as a pedestrian. The top tier reward was to become one of the game’s driver characters with a custom car of your own design. This reward sold out, with all three places taken up by backers who were willing to give $10,000.

Patrick Buckland, Stainless co-founder and CEO said: “This result is way beyond our expectations, and shows again how fantastic this crowd funding model can be for the independent developer.

“We’re so pleased to have been one of the band of pioneering videogame studios on Kickstarter. It shows what a fantastic opportunity this is for both the indie studios and gamers alike.”

Stainless co-founder Neil “Nobby” Barnden added: “We want to thank all of our backers for making the last month so exciting and such a huge success. Interacting directly with the people pledging money to see our project come to fruition has been a fantastic experience. We’d recommend it to any studio out there who might be thinking of taking the plunge into a Kickstarter campaign themselves… It’s mad, it’s exhausting, but SO rewarding.”

That Exciting Game Is Coming To Linux

Linux is definitely getting a port of Carmageddon

Last month Linux Gamers Are Going Crazy For This New Game that was possibly coming to Linux, but today it’s been officially confirmed by the developers that it will indeed be ported.

The game in question is Carmageddon: Reincarnation, which has been a very popular Kickstarter project. Funding ends today and with a “stretch goal” of $600,000 USD they were going to provide a Linux and Mac OS X client. They’re only at $578k right now, but the developers have said regardless they will be providing a native Linux version of this unique racing game (via this update).

Here’s some information describing the game from their Kickstarter game: “Carmageddon: Reincarnation is going to reintroduce the gaming world to the original freeform driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows) equal points and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps. Originally released for the PC in 1997, Carmageddon was an instant hit thanks to its anarchic gameplay and over-the-top surreal comedy violence…Carmageddon: Reincarnation is a re-boot of everything that made the original games such a blast to play. The new game will be inspired by the classic environments, cars, drivers and power-ups from the original, but dragged screaming and kicking into the current state of the rendered art. And of course, there will be a bunch of brand new STUFF too, including true rag-doll pedestrians and physics-based power-ups that let you mess with their limbs whilst wiping away the tears – of laughter!”

Many Linux gamers can now rejoice that were excited about this title to begin with while other gamers can be happy that it’s just not yet-another-first-person-shooter working its way to your favorite Linux distribution.

Carmageddon dream is one step closer to reality

Getting closer to the long awaited Linux port

Following reports that game developer Stainless Games would be attempting to reinstate one of its cult classics from the 90s, Carmageddon, it seems the dream could be set to become a reality after all.

The proposed re-release of Carmageddon made the headlines earlier this month as a project was launched to raise funds for the venture. Using crowd fundraising site Kickstarter, the developer aimed to raise a quarter of a million pounds to bring this dream to life.

Carmageddon hitting the mark

With just over a week left on the campaign, Stainless Games has proudly announced that its target has been met –the firm has netted an impressive $430,000 via Kickstarter.

Extending their promise, the firm revealed that should it reach the $600,000 threshold, it will also release Max and Linux ports of the game – offering avid fans even more chances to get to grips with this reincarnated retro classic.

Carmageddon reinvention

The decision to reinvent this classic game is one which has been met with widespread support considering the original game’s cult status. Released alongside popular titles such as the first Grand Theft Auto game, Carmageddon caused controversy with its extreme violence and gore – features which helped it sell more than two million copies back in its heyday.

Since then, numerous classic games have come and gone with certain franchises, such as the GTA series and the Mortal Kombat chain still in circulation today.

The latest title in the Carmageddon series, which will be released after a gap of over ten years, will be entitled Carmageddon: Reincarnation, and is said to be based on the original two releases rather than the unpopular third title (Carmageddon: Total Destruction 2000).

This was released at the end of 2000 by the publisher of the Carmageddon series, SCi, but had no affiliation with Stainless Games.

Carmageddon release dates

If things continue as they are, gamers could have their hands on the PC-based Carmageddon: Reincarnation early next year. Intended releases for PSN/XBLA are scheduled for later in the year.
